There are several energy efficiency schemes and grants available today. They vary from region to region and are run by a variety of organisations. But while the eligibility criteria for the schemes may differ around the UK, it has recently been confirmed that grants for cavity wall insulation and loft insulation will continue to be available until at least 2011.

There are currently two types of insulation grants available to homeowners: the 100% grants cover the full cost of Cavity Wall Insulation and Loft Insulation, and grants of between 40% and 70% which can cover a sizeable proportion of the cost. The 100% grants are not always available in all areas, but in both cases, the insulation grants are free of any charge and do not have to be paid back.

The 100% Insulation Grants

Anyone aged 70 or above living in the home is entitled to a Wall Insulation Grant or Loft Insulation Grants which will cover the full cost of any insulatiavity on work. This called a CERT70. However, this grant depends on the availability of funding at the time. If you are a pensioner aged under 70, you will not receive a 100% insulation grant unless you receive a qualifying benefit.

In addition, the 100% insulation grants are available to households if anyone living in the home receives any of the following benefits, tax credits or allowances:

  • Attendance Allowance
  • Income Support
  • Council Tax Benefit
  • Disability Living Allowance
  • Disabled Persons Tax Credit
  • Housing Benefit
  • Child Tax Credit*
  • Working Tax Credit*
  • Industrial Injuries Disablement Benefit **
  • Income-Based Jobseekers Allowance
  • War Disablement Pension ***
  • Pension Credit (state pension only does not qualify)

* Net combined household income must be under £15,592
** Must also be in receipt of Constant Attendance Allowance
*** Must include Mobility Supplement or Constant Attendance Allowance

The partial Insulation Grants

The good news is that even if you do not qualify for a 100% insulation grant, you are still eligible for the standard homeowners insulation grant of between 40% and 70% of the installation cost. This is called ATP or Able-To-Pay Funding, which means homeowners will have to pay a small contribution towards the insulation cost. For example, a 50% grant awarded to a normal semi-detached house for loft insulation would mean the homeowner paying as little as £199, the remainder being funded by one of the utility companies. The same figures also apply for cavity wall insulation. Of course, the homeowner could expect a payback of this kind of figure from the savings made on heating bills within one to two years.
