Cavity Wall Inulation Grants are available now that will cover from 50% to 100% of the cost of insulating your cavity walls.

According to the Government’s energy efficiency division at DEFRA, up to half of all heat lost in an average house goes straight through the walls and proper wall insulation can stop up to two thirds of this heat loss.

Simply speaking, insulation in the walls of your home prevents heat loss in winter, also heat gain in summer, and reduces your energy consumption for heating resulting in:
  • Lower heating bills
  • Lower ‘wear and tear’ on your boiler
  • Reduced Global Warming and Climate Change
For example, a centrally heated home built in the 1970’s without insulation would consume about five times as much as a home built to today’s Building Regulations. If this home had a floor area of 120m2, the gas bill would be about £500 per year, but the same house built to current regulations would cost about £100 per year. Insulation will also cut CO2 emissions by around 1 tonne.

What Is Cavity Wall Insulation?

In most houses built between 1930 and 1985 the external walls consists of two walls – an inner and outer - with a small 'cavity' between them. If these walls are unfilled, ie, not insulated, a considerable amount of your heating will be lost through the walls.

Cavity Wall Insulation GrantsCavity wall insulation is injected into the cavity between the inner and outer leaves of brickwork. A technician will do this from the outside of the property. There are a variety of different insulating materials, but they all work in the same way: by combining with the still captive air, the insulation acts as a barrier to heat loss.

It can normally be applied through small holes drilled in the wall. The material is then injected through the holes, filling the cavity. The holes are filled in after to make as perfect a match as possible with the existing wall.

The materials used for cavity wall insulation are mineral wool, urea formaldehyde foam and expanded polystyrene bead, and do not affect the fire resistance of the walls. They are also resistant to rot, fungi and vermin. All cavity wall installations are backed by a 25 year independent guarantee from CIGA, the Cavity Insulation Guarantee Agency.

Is your property suitable?

The main consideration is whether your home was built with or without cavity walls. The first check is the age of your home – built in brick after 1930 and you should have cavities. The second check is the thickness of the walls – look at a window opening for at least 10”. The final check is the pattern of brickwork – if whole bricks are laid alongside each other it will mean you have cavities, if they are laid whole brick followed by a brick end the wall will be solid with no cavities.

Brick Layout
A few of the other reasons that will usually prevent cavity wall insulation being installed are:
  • Flats, pied a terres and rented accommodation
  • Evidence of damp on the walls. This will seriously affect the insulation properties and must cured first
  • The cavity width is less than 2" (50mm)
  • The property has a timber or steel frame, or constructed of stone
  • The cavity has any rubble inside
  • Ventilation is inadequate and air vents cannot be fitted.
  • The walls already insulated, perhaps by a previous owner. A quick check is look for small holes (about the size of a 10p piece) in the mortar between the bricks.
  • Other things that may cause problems are excessive cladding on the exterior wall (such as stone), and large extensions and car ports.
